Expense Receipts – Delighting the Most Detail Oriented
If your expense receipts live neatly in ProOnGo Expense, there is a good chance that you are using our emailed-in-receipts feature. That’s becoming a very popular scenario, because you can email in your receipts for auto-matching without ever even opening the mobile app. It seems like we struck a nerve, in a good way, when we told people that they don’t even need to bother opening the app at all if they merely want to get their receipts auto-attached to the right transactions.
Expense Receipts – Achieving Delight via an Accelerometer
If you are one of the many who forward in receipts via smartphone, you might have wondered how your phone (and ProOnGo) somehow know what side of the receipt is “up”. You can thank a handy part called an Accelerometer for that. This is what allows a smartphone to know what orientation you are holding the phone at, when you snap a picture of a receipt. If you are holding your receipt upright, and your phone upright, the phone is going to do a great job of saving that receipt upright when it writes out the .PNG or .JPG.
What If? What Then…
But what if you happen to take a picture of a receipt that is sitting flat on a table, and your phone is virtually “flat” as well, held directly above the receipt. Well, although your accelerometer is helpful in all kinds of scenarios, it struggles in this one: if your phone is held flat, above a flat surface, your accelerometer can’t do much good for you when it comes to knowing how to orient the receipt that you are taking a picture of. So, there is a chance that you’ll end up sending in a receipt that is off by 90 degrees, 180 degrees, or 270 degrees.
In those cases, it’s easy to use the web app to rotate the receipt to be upright. It probably doesn’t make much of a difference to your accountant, and it doesn’t make a difference to us. However, we’ve been asked for a way to let users rotate their own receipts, and now you have it:
Obviously, once you’ve rotated the receipt, it’ll show up correctly not only in the web app…
…but also in reports that you export from ProOnGo.
